TOP 5 cities by the Mediterranean that are worth a visit

According to the publication, traditionally cities such as Rome or Barcelona are considered the most popular among tourists, and this is well deserved. However, these two cities can also be an ideal starting point for a more detailed study of the culture and traditions of other regions of the Mediterranean coast, where you can also find a lot of interesting things.

Valencia (Spain)

Valencia (Spain) The southeastern port city of Spain Valencia is home to two world-famous Spanish dishes: paella (saffron-colored rice with olive oil) and orchata (several types of soft drinks made from ground almonds, sesame, rice, barley or Chufa nodules). Both culinary creations can still be found throughout the city.

Experts also advise visiting the Turia Gardens city park with numerous bridges, which surrounds the whole Valencia like a river. The park owed this form to the flood of 1957, after which it was decided to divert the course of the local river in a different direction, and the liberated territory was equipped for pedestrian and bicycle paths.

By the way, on the territory of the gardens is the Museum of Modern Art of Valencia with free admission on Sundays and Friday evenings.

Tunisia (Tunisia)

Tunisia (Tunisia) After two terrorist attacks in 2015, tourism in the capital of Tunisia experienced a significant decline. But now this stunning North African city is starting to attract tourists again.

Particularly interesting for travelers here may be the well-preserved ruins of Carthage, dating from 814 BC. e. This port hub in the Gulf of Tunisia resembles Pompeii. Here visitors can see the infrastructure created by the Romans and Phoenicians, including large public baths, an amphitheater and cemeteries. While the nearby village of Sidi Bou Said offers a more modern view of life in Tunisia: white buildings with blue shutters and bougainvilleas, shops and cafes where you can hide from the heat.

At the same time, the Medina quarter in Tunisia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is famous for its many souvenir shops where you can buy handmade ceramics, spices, incense, glass lamps, wicker carpets and much more. At the same time, experts recall that bargaining with sellers is commonplace in the Tunisian Medina, and therefore tourists can safely compete for a better price.

Cagliari (Sardinia)

GCalliari (Sardinia) The city of Cagliari, located on the Italian island of Sardinia, is divided into two parts. A newer part of the city exists at sea level, while Castello’s old quarter is on a hilltop that can be reached via numerous zigzag ramps or steep stairs.

Especially experts advise taking a walk along one of the main streets of the city of Largo Carlo Felice with its many cafes with desserts for every taste. After that, you should go to the pedestrian street Via Giuseppe Manno with shops selling mainly products of Italian manufacturers. At the end of this street you can find limestone arched gates that lead to the famous historic quarter of Castello. There is also access to a palm-lined terrace, which offers beautiful views of the city and harbor, as well as the medieval part of Cagliari. At the same time, the streets in Castello, built 800 years ago, are so narrow that they remain shaded even when the sun is directly above them.

Nature lovers are also advised to head to Molentargis Park – a protected wetland inhabited by flocks of flamingos and other water birds. The plot is located only 10-15 minutes from the city.

Trapani (Sicily)

Trapani (Sicily) The coastal city of Trapani undeservedly remains not popular enough among tourists. The pedestrian historic district of Trapani itself is really quite small, and it can be completely bypassed in one day.

However, it is better to go to the top of Mount Erice by funicular or cable car. The road takes only 10 minutes, and from here a view of the whole Trapani opens. You can also visit the medieval city of Erice, where the famous Norman castle of Castello Di Venere (Venus Castle) is located from stones with excellent panoramic views of the cliffs and well-kept gardens.

It is noted that, unfortunately, the Trapani-Erice cable car works seasonally, and therefore it is worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the work schedule in advance. At the same time, tourists traveling in the off-season can quickly get to the top of the mountain by taxi.

Palma (Mallorca)

Palma (Mallorca) The city of Palma, better known as Palma de Mallorca, is the main city and port of the Spanish autonomous community of the Balearic Islands, and, in fact, one of the largest cities in Spain. Famous primarily for pearls, almonds and yachts.
